Mimi Dolly Guli – A Journey of Many Hearts
Part 6 – The Fosterer’s Dilemma
By the time Mimi Dolly Guli had settled into her forever home with Tracy, many people naturally asked the same question.
If CatsHope™ had known what would happen, would we still have agreed to foster her?
It is an understandable question.
When Mimi Dolly Guli first needed a foster home, we initially declined.
Not because we didn’t care.
Quite the opposite.
At the time, CatsHope™ was undergoing renovations. Our normal quarantine arrangements had been disrupted, space was limited, and we already had a large family of resident rescue cats to protect.
A responsible rescue does not simply think about the new arrival.
It must also consider the welfare of every animal already in its care.
Then the circumstances changed.
Tracy had never met Mimi Dolly Guli.
She had not visited her.
She had not spent time getting to know her.
In fact, the first time Tracy would meet Mimi Dolly Guli in person was the day she came to bring her home.
Having previously adopted Donut through CatsHope™, Tracy trusted us to do what we had also done for Donut—to rehabilitate Mimi Dolly Guli, ensure she was healthy, litter-trained, behaviourally ready for a home, screened for infectious diseases, and cared for if any medical issues arose before adoption.
Most importantly, Tracy simply could not bear the thought of a young rescued cat being released back into an uncertain future because there was nowhere for her to go. Her decision was an act of compassion.
Neither Tracy nor CatsHope™ could ever have imagined the events that would follow.
Looking back today, we know that Mimi Dolly Guli unknowingly carried a virus that triggered the first colony-wide respiratory outbreak in CatsHope™’s history.
But Mimi Dolly Guli was never to blame.
She did not choose to be abandoned.She did not choose to live on the streets.She did not choose to become a carrier.She was simply another rescued cat carrying the unseen burdens of life on the streets.
Likewise, no one involved acted carelessly or irresponsibly.

Her First Days at CatsHope™

The finder cared enough to seek help.
The trappers brought her to safety.
The veterinary teams provided the care they believed was appropriate.
CatsHope™ opened its doors because the alternative was for Mimi Dolly Guli to face an uncertain future.
Tracy honoured her commitment from beginning to end, standing by Mimi Dolly Guli even when she later required further treatment and a 21-day stay at the veterinary clinic following her second vaccination.
Everyone acted out of compassion, making the best decisions they could with the information available at the time.
Would we make the same decision again?
Yes.
Not because the experience was easy.Not because there were no consequences.But because every rescued cat deserves the opportunity to find safety, love and a family to call their own.
What changed was not our willingness to help.
What changed was our understanding.
Every rescue teaches us something.
Mimi Dolly Guli taught us many valuable lessons about fostering, quarantine, rehabilitation and preparing rescued cats for life in their forever homes.
Those lessons have strengthened CatsHope™ and will help us provide even better care for future rescue cats.

That is why Mimi Dolly Guli became CatsHope™’s first Honorary Mascot.
Not because she was rescued.
Not because she unknowingly became part of CatsHope™’s first colony-wide respiratory outbreak.
But because her journey represents the very heart of what rescue is all about.
It is a story that speaks to finders, rescuers, fosterers, adopters, veterinarians, caregivers and supporters alike.
It reminds us that rescue is never the work of one person alone.
It is a journey built on many hearts, many hands, and one shared belief…
That every life is worth saving.
