Part I — Mimi and Tara

Mimi arrived first, on 30 June 2017, a tiny newborn rescued from a parking lot, still with the stem of her umbilical cord attached. She had to be bottle-fed and cared for around the clock.

Nine months later, on 30 March 2018, Tara arrived. She was approximately seven to ten weeks old, already alert and independent, with the sharp features of an extreme wedge Siamese and the darker lynx-point tips on her ears.

They were not born together, yet life brought them into the same home.

At first, Mimi was not particularly pleased with the new arrival. Having enjoyed nine months as the sole feline recipient of attention and affection, she was in no hurry to share her privileged position.

Tara, however, was determined to belong. She watched Mimi closely, observing her habits, her privileges and the affection she received. Slowly, she learned the ways of her new home.

It took nearly a year for Mimi to fully accept Tara.

Like many siblings, they had their disagreements. Sometimes they played together, racing through the apartment, leaping off walls and furniture in exuberant bursts of energy. At other times, they preferred to keep their distance.

Yet beneath their occasional quarrels, a bond was forming.

Tara often assumed the role of a small guardian, patrolling the home at night and keeping watch over everything that happened. Mimi, gentler in nature, seemed content to rest beside her.

Their bond revealed itself most clearly during a visit to the veterinary clinic.

Earlier that day, the two had been at odds. Yet when they were placed together in the same carrier, neither protested.

At the clinic, Mimi became frightened and began to tremble. Tara immediately moved closer, placing a protective paw over her companion and shielding her as best she could.

Whatever disagreement they had shared that morning was forgotten.

When it was time for their examination, Tara stepped forward first, as though volunteering to face whatever awaited them.

It was a small but deeply moving demonstration of loyalty and affection.

They returned home together and resumed their familiar routines—sometimes companions, sometimes rivals, but always part of the same family.

They had arrived in this world separately, under very different circumstances. Neither had chosen the beginning of her life, but together they had found warmth, security and companionship.

They were not sisters by birth.

They became sisters through the life they shared.

Siblings by circumstance, and family by love.

Part II — Sisters by Life

She walks the night—
quiet, watchful, unseen.

Not always a friend,
not always in agreement.

But when it mattered,
she stood close—

a fierce protector
of those beside her,
and the space she calls her own.

Two little souls,
born apart,
brought together by chance.

One gentle and tender,
the other fierce and brave.

They quarrelled,
they played,
they learned each other’s ways.

And when one trembled,
the other stood guard.

No bond of blood,
no promise spoken—
only the quiet certainty
of belonging.

Not sisters by birth,
but sisters by life.

Siblings by circumstance,
a family by love.
